Mysore Style is name used to described the traditional way to learn Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. 1:1 teaching within a group setting for everybody. How is it ALL LEVELS? In the Mysore room you will see daily practitioners of 25+ years and 2 weeks practicing side by side, all bodies, ability, ages, sizes, genders are welcome. By working individually with each student, the approach is paced in a way suited to you as you learn the Ashtanga Vinyasa system. Breath-work, āsana (postures), meditation and community are all paramount as features to this practice. What's "Mysore" : This is named after a city in southern India, and where the founder Pattabhi Jois designed the Ashtanga Vinyasa series and how he used to teach in this 1:1 way in a group setting. This is different from "LED" style classes- where everyone moves together at the same pace. Who is the "Mysore Team": As a large program (60+hrs per week) we have more than 1 teacher. Our teachers who teach this method are highly skilled after dedicating significant portions of their lives (10yrs+) to the study and practice of the ancient tradition and take great care to partake this ancient tradition to you. In the Mysore style room we will work with you verbally, visually and kinetically (hands on assists) with clear consent and always keen for open dialogue if you don't want to be touched or have questions. All of our main teaching team have done extensive Trauma informed training with Edinburgh Community Yoga. The Mysore start time is flexible, however know that you may need to leave the practice space promptly at the end of the class time. Sunday Sangha Weaving together storytelling, chanting, prāṇāyāma and philosophical discussion, this community-focused offering is an opportunity to explore the rich traditions of yoga that go beyond āsana. All are welcome, with no prior knowledge or experience necessary. This is a free or donation based event (Mysore monthly members- welcome to attend without signing up). A typical session may involve a short meditation, a prāṇāyāma practice or two, a story or idea to discuss from texts like the Yoga Sūtra or the Upaṇiṣads, or mantras to learn and chant. Join us in the śāla or settle in with a mug of tea at home, bring your questions and ideas or simply enjoy the sweet sounds of chanting. No yoga mat required! The Zoom details are the same as the regular Online Mysore offering and detailed in booking.
